GoMRI and Sea Grant Outreach Gulf State Events: Decade of Discovery

Principal Investigator
Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI)

Summary:

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) and the Sea Grant oil spill outreach team hosted Gulf Coast state events highlighting GoMRI’s unique contributions to research, recovery, and resilience in each Gulf state over the past decade. Established in response to the Deepwater Horizon incident, GoMRI has led an independent, 10-year, $500 million research program focused on the Gulf of Mexico, which has traditionally been underfunded, to study the effect of oil spills on the environment and public health. As the GoMRI program nears its conclusion, the focus has turned to its legacy and the application of knowledge accrued to the long-term environmental health of the Gulf of Mexico.

Each state event featured scientists affiliated with their respective state who were involved with GoMRI research as well as members of the GoMRI Research Board and administration. The events were attended virtually via Zoom and Facebook Live.
