Summary:
GoMRI’s Synthesis Core Area 7, Integrated/Linked Modeling System, focused on operational oil spill modeling, including ocean, wave, and weather forecasting, and development of a systems dynamic model, which could be used for future decision-making. Core Area 7 is broken down into two categories:
- (7a)- Operational (Linked) Modeling -Short term, given oil today, where will it be tomorrow, in a few days? A forecasting problem needs good initial values and forecasts of ocean currents, weather and waves, as well as a model of how oil responds to all this..
- (7b)- Integrated Modeling - Longer scale: weeks, months, years. Given an oil spill, how will ecosystems and humans (e.g. human health) respond? Projection problem, need to assess various scenarios and ask, “what if?”
