Study Gives Post-Oil Spill Baseline for Particle Fluxes in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Posted on May 22, 2018
Researchers assessed several years of sediment trap collections near the Deepwater Horizon site, an active natural seep site, and a reference site to understand transport pathways and drivers of sinking particles in deepwater environments (1400 m depth).

Study Expands Analytical Window for Marine and Oil Spill Chemistry

Posted on May 23, 2017
Scientists tested a new analytical method for a fast and comprehensive characterization of organic compounds in marine sediments. The Rapid Analyte Detection and Reconnaissance (RADAR) method couples atmospheric pressure photoionization in positive ion mode (APPI-P) with Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS).

Grad Student Tang Studies Whale Populations’ Oil Spill Recovery

Posted on May 23, 2016
When disaster strikes, responders look at how creatures in its path may be impacted to mitigate damage. Tingting Tang takes the process one step further, using mathematical models to predict how long recovery may take. The creatures that Tingting focuses on are some of the Gulf of Mexico’s largest predators and most charismatic animals, beaked and sperm whales.

May 28 Synthesis Webinar for Core Area 7 Integrated / Linked Modeling System
GoMRI Synthesis Core Area 7B is developing a conceptual modeling framework that will synthesize new knowledge gained since Deepwater Horizon. Tuesday, May 28 from 10-11 AM ET is the Physics webinar, moderated by Cecelie Mauritzen and Eric Cassignet. Speakers are William Dewar, Florida State University, Deep oil spills from the first kilometer to the last kilometer and whatever is in between; Deborah French-McCay, RPS ASA (formerly Applied Science Associates) Modeling oil transport, fate, and exposure for evaluation of environmental impacts; and Michael Stukel, Florida State University (title TBD). More details, including webinar link, available here.

Call for Session Proposals: 2020 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference
June 21, 2019 is the deadline to submit a GoMOSES session proposal. The conference Executive Committee will select sessions to reflect a balance of programmatic goals, including basic science, applied research, topic-specific synthesis, and interdisciplinary efforts. Strong consideration will be given to proposals that seek to identify knowledge gaps for future research. Submit session proposals here.

June 5 Deadline: $2.5 M for Gulf Research Program's Loop Current Studies
Submit grant applications for Fostering Innovation to Improve Understanding and Prediction of the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current System, which is part of the larger study Understanding Gulf Ocean Systems. The solicitation's focus is to support innovative theories, technologies, or methodologies that build upon the existing understanding of Loop Current System dynamics and help improve forecasting capabilities of the Loop Current and its associated eddies.

Project Activities

RECOVER Tool Tuesday Highlights Fish Slings
Once wild mahi-mahi has been caught on a line, the team’s researchers guide it into a vinyl fish sling, which holds water to prevent the fish from being exposed to air. They use the sling to quickly transport the fish to the tagging bin and then the onboard recovery tank system, limiting the fish’s time spent in the sling to reduce stress. Watch a video here!

Get to Know CWC Researcher Erick Swenson
Swenson assists the team with field sampling, laboratory analyses, and compiling and maintaining long-term environmental data sets that will help characterize environmental conditions during Deepwater Horizon. Learn more about his research and background here!
