Modeling Study Develops Approach to Compare Oil Slick Dispersion Scenarios

Posted on January 16, 2018
Researchers developed an algorithm that accounts for different wind speeds, oil types, natural dispersion processes (breaking waves), and chemical dispersant application to analyze oil slick evolution scenarios. The model results indicate how the oil slick will become thinner and dissipate over time as a result of dispersion.

Study Demonstrates Sinking Marine Particles Help Remove PAHs from Water Column

Posted on February 16, 2017
Researchers measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in water collected near the Deepwater Horizon site to understand how sinking particles, such as marine snow, influence the residence time of PAHs in the upper ocean.

Study Shows Raindrops Push Oil Spill Pollutants into Air and Below Sea Surface

Posted on February 9, 2016
Scientists at Johns Hopkins University used high-speed imaging and digital holography in laboratory experiments to investigate the effects of raindrops falling on a simulated oil slick.

CARMMHA Collects Mobile Bay Dolphin Prey Samples
The consortium recruited summer interns with the goal of teaching the students about the Mobile Bay marine invertebrate community as well as collect environmental data and dolphin prey samples, such as fish, shrimp, and squid.

C-IMAGE’s The Loop Podcast Now Available on SoundCloud
The thirteen available episodes feature David Levin of Mind Open Media as he interviews Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative researchers about a variety of marine science topics associated with the Gulf of Mexico and oil spill science.

RECOVER “Tuesday Tool Profile” Features Density Gradient Columns
This tool is used to measure the density of organisms too small to be weighed on standard instruments, such as mahi-mahi and red drum embryos. RECOVER’s Dr. Christina Pasparakis uses the columns to research how UV radiation, temperature, and crude oil exposure impact mahi-mahi buoyancy.
