Research on Dispersants that Informs Oil Spill Response

Posted on April 27, 2015
The prevention or reduction of coastline oiling was high on responders’ priorities immediately following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Five years later, much discussion continues about balancing benefits and risks regarding dispersants, and there are increased research efforts for alternatives or enhancements to existing dispersant systems.

GoMRI Science Teams among First Responders to Galveston Bay Oil Spill

Posted on April 22, 2014
On March 22, a cargo ship collided with a barge carrying approximately 4,000 barrels of bunker fuel oil in Galveston Bay, Texas. Within days scientists from two research consortia funded by the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) were on site alongside government and industry workers, collecting baseline information to assess impacts.

A New Flavor of Dispersant

Posted on April 30, 2013
Often misunderstood by the public, dispersants are the single biggest weapon in the arsenal of those combating an oil spill.

Research at Sea – Tracking and Identifying Oil across the Florida Shelf

Posted on May 1, 2012
Dr. Ian MacDonald with Florida State University (FSU) and Dr. Richard Snyder with the University of West Florida (UWF) have been leading a research team to track and identify oil in sediment and water samples since January 2011.
