Project Overview

Analysis of Massive In Situ Data from Moorings and Ships for Fate of Oil Spills and Dispersant and for Supporting Model Validation

Summary:

This project will mainly analyze any available hydrodynamic and hydrographic data after the oil spill of 2010 and provide a picture of the flow conditions which may influence the fate of the oil and dispersant.  We are now mostly focusing on the vertical velocity profiles obtained from dozens of oil platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Because of the large volume, we have extended our contract till June 2012, allowing us to conduct more complete and detailed analysis, interpretation, and snythesis.  The results should be useful for model validation.
